I was told that at the Shanghai World Expo, the biggest attraction in the China Pavilion was this giant animated reproduction of Qing Ming Shang He Tu (清明上河图), a well-loved and revered painting from the Song Dynasty in the 12th century (years 960 - 1279).
The original Qing Ming Shang He Tu was created by Chinese Court Artist, Zhang Zeduan, on a 5.28 metre-long scroll. The painting became famous because the artist provided an in-depth view of life at that historic time. Viewers get to explore a vibrant capital city and discover the diverse flavours and crafts of the time.
Meanwhile, the World Expo version of the original artwork is a gigantic 120m x 6m work that uses modern technology to make this a living art -- characters in the painting can be seen walking and talking across the tableau as visitors follow their moves. At the World Expo, some nine million visitors saw the painting which received rave reviews for its originality. It was the undisputed hit of the China Pavilion.
