George Suppiah, 78, a retired teacher and vice-principal, is best remembered for becoming the first Singapore soccer referee to officiate in the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany. A grandfather of two, he was a finalist in the 2003 Active Senior Citizen of the Year contest. He continues to train and mentor children in soccer, and acts as an advisor to school soccer teams and social organisations.

To My beloved Grandchildren Sasha & Joshua,

Grandma and I treasure you the most in our lives and we are proud of what you have grown up to be.

Sasha, you have taken after me and excelled in sports, representing your school in hockey and enjoying other outdoor games. Joshua, even though you are more introverted than your sister, you have your own caring nature and special qualities.

Education is the greatest wealth we can give you. Always remember to be a giving person. If people do harm to you, do not retaliate but be patient and you will win them over with kindness. Do not be a pushover but learn to have inner strength. Determination to succeed comes from within and I know you both have it.

Grandma & I love you very much.
